Hamamelis virginiana extract—commonly called witch hazel—has been the subject of several recent laboratory investigations exploring why it’s traditionally used for skin problems. Here’s what the research actually shows:

#1: Antimicrobial and antibiofilm activity. The extract demonstrated activity against multiple bacteria (including Staphylococcus aureus, E. coli, and antibiotic-resistant strains) and several species of Candida fungi in laboratory settings (An Acad Bras Cienc, 2024; Antibiotics (Basel), 2023). Notably, it reduced biofilm formation—the protective communities bacteria form on surfaces—when tested in the lab. However, potency varied depending on how the extract was prepared; methanolic and water-based extracts were more effective than others (Antibiotics (Basel), 2023).

#2: Anti-inflammatory effects on skin cells. When human skin cells were exposed to inflammatory triggers (cytokines that mimic eczema-like or acne-like conditions), the extract reduced the release of inflammatory molecules including IL-6, IL-8, and IL-17C (Int J Mol Sci, 2022; Antioxidants (Basel), 2022).
