🔬 The Science

Melaleuca alternifolia leaf oil, commonly known as tea tree oil, appears in two distinct research contexts. #1: Allergic sensitivity is a documented concern—Contact Dermatitis (2023) reports that tea tree oil was among the most common essential oils causing allergic contact dermatitis in a study of 42 patients, with 8 requiring hospitalization. The research found that 71% of these patients had positive patch test reactions to fragrance mixes, while some reacted specifically to their personal tea tree oil product, suggesting individual sensitization matters. Notably, only 33% of patients who used essential oils received purchase advice, and 40% didn’t initially mention their use.

For diagnosis, the researchers recommend testing patients’ actual used products alongside standard baseline tests. #2: In terms of antimicrobial activity, Arch Soc Esp Oftalmol (2023) evaluated tea tree oil against bacteria that cause chronic eyelid infections (staphylococcal blepharitis). In laboratory culture tests, Melaleuca alternifolia leaf oil created inhibition zones of 12.65 mm against Staphylococcus aureus and 15.83 mm against coagulase-negative Staphylococcus. For context, the researchers compared this to chlorhexidine (a common disinfectant, 26.55 mm and 23.12 mm), antibiotics like vancomycin, and hypochlorous acid. The study concluded that tea tree oil “shows less efficacy” than these alternatives. The sources don’t provide information about tea tree oil’s effectiveness on other common skin bacteria or fungi, or at different concentrations than tested here.
