Description: PALMITOYL OLIGOPEPTIDE — peptide, supports collagen production, anti-aging.

All Functions: peptide, supports collagen production, anti-aging

Quick Facts:

  • Category: active

Proven Benefits At A Glance:

  • PALMITOYL OLIGOPEPTIDE is a modified peptide that includes palmitoylation, a type of chemical modification
  • Research shows a related compound (palmitoyl-RGD) may support skin structure by boosting production of laminin and collagen at the dermal-epidermal junction
  • Palmitoylation is a biochemical process that affects protein function, localization, and stability in cells
  • Limited direct human data exists; most evidence comes from laboratory studies on skin cells
Safety: Generally Low ConcernResearch confidence: Good

Safety tier is a starting heuristic from regulatory status and comedogenic rating, not a dermatological verdict — see our Terms for the full disclaimer. Research confidence reflects how many real cited studies back this ingredient, not the strength of their findings.

Korean Name: 팔미토일올리고펩타이드

Palmitoyl Oligopeptide (Retired) is the product obtained by the reaction of palmitic acid with either a tripeptide consisting of gly-his-lys, or a hexapeptide consisting of val-gly-val-ala-pro-gly.

The INCI Name, Palmitoyl Oligopeptide, originally developed in 1994, was designated with a retired status in 2013. For an interim period of time, trade name assignments formerly published with the name Palmitoyl Oligopeptide will be retained in the retired monograph, and also published with the new name assignments which are either Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1 or Palmitoyl Hexapeptide-12.

PALMITOYL OLIGOPEPTIDE is an active ingredient used in skincare formulations.

🔬 The Science

PALMITOYL OLIGOPEPTIDE is a peptide—a short chain of amino acids—with a palmitic acid (a fatty acid) attached via a process called palmitoylation. This modification influences how proteins behave inside cells. For skincare specifically, research has examined a similar palmitoylated peptide called palmitoyl-RGD (PAL-RGD). According to a 2022 study in *Molecular Medicine Reports*, #1: topical treatment with PAL-RGD improved facial wrinkles, skin elasticity, and dermal density in human volunteers. In laboratory tests using human skin cells (keratinocytes), #2: PAL-RGD increased production of three key structural proteins—laminin-332, collagen IV, and collagen XVII—in a dose-dependent manner (meaning higher concentrations produced stronger effects). These proteins are crucial components of the dermal-epidermal junction (DEJ), the boundary layer between the outer skin and deeper layers.

#3: As skin ages, this junction naturally thins and loses these proteins, which is thought to contribute to wrinkles and loss of firmness. More broadly, palmitoylation itself plays important roles in cell biology. According to a 2012 review in *Antioxidation & Redox Signaling*, palmitoylation affects protein trafficking, localization within cells, and cellular signaling. However, the sources provided do not contain direct evidence that PALMITOYL OLIGOPEPTIDE specifically delivers these benefits in human skin beyond the PAL-RGD study mentioned. The research on PALMITOYL OLIGOPEPTIDE as an ingredient is limited; most supportive data comes from a related—but not identical—compound tested in both cells and a small human study.
