🔬 The Science

Piroctone olamine is a salt form of the antifungal compound piroctone, specifically designed for topical use on skin and scalp (Int J Cosmet Sci, 2023). Dandruff and its more severe form, seborrheic dermatitis, are linked to a combination of factors including disruption of the scalp’s protective barrier and overgrowth of microorganisms, particularly the fungus Malassezia (Int J Cosmet Sci, 2024). #1: The ingredient works as an antifungal agent to manage dandruff (Int J Cosmet Sci, 2023). #2: Research using DNA sequencing of scalp microbiomes shows that after 3 weeks of treatment with a 0.5% piroctone olamine shampoo, the ingredient reduces levels of problematic organisms like Malassezia restricta and Staphylococcus capitis while increasing beneficial Cutibacterium acnes, essentially restoring a healthier microbial balance (Int J Cosmet Sci, 2024).

The physicochemical properties of piroctone olamine—how it dissolves and behaves in different liquids—affect how well it penetrates and deposits on skin (Int J Cosmet Sci, 2023). It dissolves best in methanol and propylene glycol but shows poor solubility in some other solvents, and it remains stable in ethanol and propylene glycol systems but degrades in water-based solutions over several days (Int J Cosmet Sci, 2023). #4: How effectively piroctone olamine reaches your scalp depends heavily on the delivery system: in laboratory testing with human skin, no permeation occurred when the ingredient was dissolved in single solvents alone, but permeation increased significantly when combined in two- or three-component solvent systems, with the best results from specific propylene glycol and Transcutol combinations (Int J Cosmet Sci, 2024).
