🔬 The Science

Sesamum indicum seed oil is the source of sesamol, a naturally occurring phenolic compound with several potentially beneficial effects for skin (Planta Med, 2017). However, sesamol’s usefulness in topical skincare has been limited by unfavorable chemical and physical properties that prevent it from working effectively when applied to skin. To overcome this problem, researchers have developed nanostructured lipid carriers—think of these as tiny, engineered containers made from fats and oils that can encapsulate and deliver sesamol more effectively to skin. When sesame oil itself was used as part of these delivery systems, the researchers achieved very high encapsulation efficiency (over 90%), meaning the sesamol was successfully captured and protected (Planta Med, 2017).

The research demonstrated two key findings: #1: These nanostructured lipid carrier systems could control how quickly sesamol diffuses through the skin, allowing for more sustained delivery compared to basic formulations (Planta Med, 2017). #2: When sesamol was delivered via these optimized sesame oil-based carriers, it showed “interesting and prolonged antioxidant activity”—meaning the skin-protecting benefits lasted longer than with other delivery methods (Planta Med, 2017). It’s important to note that these findings are from laboratory and in-vitro testing (using excised human skin samples), so they demonstrate potential rather than proven real-world results in finished consumer products.
