Simmondsia chinensis seed oil, commonly known as jojoba oil, has been the subject of recent research exploring its potential skincare applications, though the evidence base remains limited. #1: Cell effects in lab conditions — When researchers from J Craniofac Surg (2026) exposed nasal epithelial cells (the cells lining the nasal cavity) directly to Simmondsia chinensis seed oil in a laboratory setting, they found that the oil reduced cell viability in a dose-dependent manner, meaning higher concentrations caused stronger effects. The study used an MTT assay, a standard lab test that measures how actively cells are metabolizing, as a proxy for cell health.

At the lowest concentration tested (1 microliter), effects were already measurable, and viability declined steadily as oil concentration increased. Researchers emphasize, however, that these results are from direct cell exposure in a petri dish and that “more clinical and experimental studies are needed to determine its therapeutic potential and safety profile before it may be used in clinical practice.”

#2: Formulation vehicle — Research in Pharmazie (2013) describes jojoba oil as a base ingredient in oleogels, which are gel-like formulations designed for skincare and drug delivery.
