🔬 The Science

Arginine is an amino acid—a building block of proteins—that your body uses in several important ways. Here’s what the research actually shows:

#1: Immune function and T cells. When T cells (immune cells) activate, they undergo metabolic changes that deplete their intracellular arginine. Restoring arginine levels shifts these cells toward more efficient energy production and increases their survival capacity and anti-tumor activity in mouse models (Cell, 2016). This is interesting for understanding immune resilience, but it’s an internal process. #2: Wound healing support. A 2025 systematic review of 15 studies involving 1,085 people with pressure ulcers found that arginine supplementation (often combined with glutamine) showed a trend toward improved healing, with wound size reductions ranging from 18.6% to 98.2% over 2 to 20 weeks (Wound Repair Regen, 2025).

However, the review explicitly states the evidence remains “inconclusive”—seven studies showed non-significant or unreported differences in wound size, and six had similar issues for healing time. The mechanism appears to involve supporting collagen synthesis and tissue repair. #3: Hair loss and metabolic dysfunction. Recent metabolomics research identified arginine deficiency as the most pronounced amino acid reduction in androgenetic alopecia (hair loss) patients compared to healthy controls. In hair follicles, impaired arginine uptake and accelerated breakdown combine to create local arginine scarcity, which triggers reactive oxygen species accumulation, inhibits growth signaling (mTOR), and impairs hair follicle regeneration. Arginine restoration in lab and animal models rescued hair growth, and a microneedle delivery system showed promise in humanized models (Adv Sci, 2025).

This is promising but still primarily in research stages. #4: Inflammatory and infection processes. Arginine metabolism is implicated in monocyte recruitment and inflammatory tissue damage in conditions like COPD (Nat Commun, 2022), and arginine depletion within bacterial biofilms can reduce antibiotic effectiveness (Nat Commun, 2024). These are systemic processes, not skin health per se. Important caveat: Most of this research examines arginine’s role in internal metabolism, immune function, and wound healing via supplementation or systemic delivery—not topical application to skin. The skincare implications remain largely unexplored in these sources.
