Acacia gum (also called gum Arabic) is a natural polysaccharide that has gained attention as a topical prebiotic—a substance that feeds beneficial microorganisms on your skin. #1: In atopic dermatitis (AD), a chronic inflammatory skin condition, the skin microbiota becomes imbalanced, with harmful Staphylococcus aureus overgrowth and loss of protective bacteria. Research published in NPJ Biofilms Microbiomes (2026) found that when acacia gum was applied topically in a mouse model of AD, it selectively promoted the growth of S. epidermidis, a commensal (friendly) bacterium, while suppressing S. aureus. The mechanism involved multiple pathways: acacia gum had direct antibacterial activity against S.

aureus, and it also enhanced production of glutamyl endopeptidase in S. epidermidis, which further inhibited S. aureus colonization. #2: Beyond microbiota shifts, acacia gum reduced inflammatory signaling by downregulating pro-inflammatory molecules (cytokines and chemokines) in both skin cells (keratinocytes) and immune cells (macrophages). #3: In the AD mouse model, topical acacia gum reduced S. aureus burden by three orders of magnitude (meaning roughly 1,000-fold reduction), improved overall microbial diversity, partially restored skin barrier integrity, and decreased inflammatory cell infiltration without detectable toxicity (NPJ Biofilms Microbiomes, 2026). Acacia gum has also been investigated in hydrogel wound dressings combined with silver nanoparticles.

According to Gels (2023), these formulations showed faster wound healing rates and antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, with good biocompatibility. However, it is important to note that the Gels study employed acacia gum as one component in a complex hydrogel system with multiple active ingredients, so the isolated contribution of acacia gum alone is unclear. Regarding safety, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA, 2025) concluded that acacia gum does not raise concerns for genotoxicity when used as a feed additive in animals. However, the EFSA identified acacia gum as a potential dermal and respiratory sensitizer, meaning some individuals may experience allergic contact reactions or respiratory irritation upon exposure, and any dermal or inhalation exposure is considered a potential risk (EFSA, 2022 and 2025).

The research supporting acacia gum’s efficacy in skincare is currently limited to animal models and controlled laboratory systems; human clinical trials would be needed to confirm these effects translate to real-world use.
