Ceteareth-25 is an emulsifier—a substance that helps mix oil and water together in cream formulations, since these two ingredients don’t naturally blend. In a 2017 study published in Clujul Med, researchers used Ceteareth-25 alongside glyceryl stearate to create an anti-aging cream containing plant-based actives like Centella asiatica oil, Spilanthes acmella oil, Zingiber officinale extract, and ferulic acid. #1: When Ceteareth-25 was the emulsifier system used, it produced smaller oil droplets (averaging 10.26 mm) and a lower polydispersity index (35.4%) compared to a formulation using potassium cetyl phosphate instead, which had larger droplets (22.72 mm) and higher polydispersity (45.7%). The polydispersity index measures how uniform the droplet sizes are—lower values indicate more uniformity.

#2: The Ceteareth-25 formulation also showed higher consistency (594.7 g) and firmness (51.2 g) in texture testing, suggesting it created a thicker, more stable cream. However, it’s important to note that this research focused on the physical characteristics of the cream itself rather than isolating the skincare benefits of Ceteareth-25 as an ingredient. The study’s clinical efficacy results—showing increased skin density after 8 weeks—tested the complete cream formula with all its active ingredients, so benefits cannot be attributed to Ceteareth-25 alone.
