Most skincare consumers encounter this ingredient in serums and moisturizers, though the research we have focuses on a specialized extract rather than the oil itself as typically used in consumer products. The available research examines something called the “unsaponifiable fraction” (UnSap) from black Vitis vinifera seed oil, which is the portion of the oil that doesn’t saponify—a technical term meaning it doesn’t convert to soap when treated with alkaline chemicals. This fraction is enriched in phenolic compounds and phytosterols, plant-derived molecules with antioxidant properties (Sci Rep, 2026).

#1: Antioxidant capacity—Laboratory testing found this extract had strong antioxidant capacity and demonstrated what researchers call a “higher selectivity index” against liver cancer cells compared to the chemotherapy drug 5-fluorouracil, meaning it affected cancer cells more effectively while showing excellent safety in human immune cells (Sci Rep, 2026). #2: Gene expression changes—In animal studies, the extract modulated expression of genes involved in multiple processes: apoptosis (programmed cell death, showing >20-fold changes), cell cycle regulation (>fourfold), inflammation (>fivefold), and angiogenesis or blood vessel formation (threefold) (Sci Rep, 2026). #3: Liver health markers—In liver cancer-bearing mice, the extract improved serum liver function markers (0.4-1.3-fold improvement) and restored redox balance, a measure of antioxidant status (>threefold improvement) (Sci Rep, 2026).
