🔬 The Science

Zinc gluconate is a compound that delivers zinc—an essential mineral your body needs for immune function and skin health. Here’s what the research actually shows:

#1: Itch relief in specific populations. In a 2024 study published in the International Journal of Preventive Medicine, hemodialysis patients (people undergoing kidney treatment) who took 210 mg of zinc gluconate daily for 12 weeks experienced improvement in pruritus (medical term for itching) compared to placebo. However, this benefit was observed only in this particular patient group, not in general populations. #2: Potential inflammation reduction in atopic dermatitis. Research in Biomedical and Pharmacotherapy (2024) found that people with atopic dermatitis (a chronic inflammatory skin condition) had lower zinc levels than healthy controls.

When researchers tested zinc gluconate in lab models of atopic dermatitis, it reduced inflammatory markers and skin thickness by working through specific cellular pathways (activating something called PPAR-alpha while reducing STAT signaling). This is promising, but the research was conducted in cell cultures and mouse models—not yet proven in humans with atopic dermatitis. #3: Appetite support in hemodialysis patients. The same 2024 study in the International Journal of Preventive Medicine showed zinc gluconate improved hunger, desire to eat, and prospective food consumption in hemodialysis patients compared to placebo—though again, this was specific to that medical population. #4: Wound healing appears neutral.

A 2014 veterinary study in Veterinary Surgery tested topical zinc gluconate on full-thickness skin wounds in rats and found it healed similarly to other treatments like saline solution. It offered no advantage over these alternatives and did not provide pain relief. #5: Anti-inflammatory potential for hidradenitis suppurativa. A 2016 study in the Journal of Dermatological Science examined 90 mg of oral zinc gluconate combined with topical triclosan in patients with hidradenitis suppurativa (a chronic inflammatory skin condition). After 3 months, disease severity improved significantly and quality of life scores rose—but this was combination therapy, so the effect cannot be attributed to zinc gluconate alone.

#6: Antibacterial activity shows mixed results. A 2024 study in Veterinary Research Communications tested zinc gluconate products against resistant bacteria and fungi in lab conditions. Zinc gluconate did show some activity against certain microorganisms, but essential oils and chlorhexidine performed differently depending on the specific bacterium or fungus tested. This was in-vitro (test tube) research; human effectiveness remains unclear. Important limitations: Most evidence comes from specific medical conditions (kidney disease, hidradenitis suppurativa, atopic dermatitis) rather than general skin health. Side effects reported include abdominal pain and nausea in oral formulations.
