Carbomer is a synthetic polymer that forms the structural backbone of many topical gel products. Here’s what the research actually tells us about how it works:

#1: Carbomer creates stable gel textures. When carbomer polymers are dissolved in water mixed with humectants like propylene glycol and glycerin, then neutralized with triethanolamine, they form gels with reliable flow properties across the pH range typical for skin products (5.0–8.0) (Pharm Res, 2004). These gels show what chemists call “pseudoplastic behavior,” meaning they feel thicker at rest but flow more easily when you spread them—a desirable texture for topical products. The gels also maintain their properties across temperature changes, which matters for product stability.

#2: Carbomer enhances skin delivery of active ingredients. When used as a base for nanoemulgels (tiny oil droplets suspended in gel), carbomer formulations can significantly increase how much of an active ingredient reaches and deposits into skin. In one study using resveratrol for psoriasis, a carbomer-based nanoemulgel achieved roughly 6.7 times higher skin deposition and a 2.9-fold permeation enhancement compared to conventional carbomer gel alone (Pharm Nanotechnol, 2020). #3: Carbomer works as a delivery platform for active compounds. The research doesn’t show carbomer itself providing skincare benefits—instead, studies pair it with specific bioactive ingredients. Similarly, carbomer gels with liquiritin (a plant compound) helped restore skin barrier function in a mouse model of steroid-damaged skin by supporting key barrier proteins and reducing inflammatory markers (Pharmaceutics, 2024). The carbomer is the delivery system; the active ingredient does the therapeutic work. Limitation: These studies use carbomer in controlled research settings, often with added bioactive ingredients or in animal models.
