🔬 The Science

Sodium phytate is an organic compound related to polyphosphates—materials that can bind to calcium and remove surface stains. Here’s what research actually shows:

#1: Tooth stain removal — Multiple studies tested sodium phytate in toothpaste formulations at concentrations between 0.5% and 0.875%. A 2018 study (J Esthet Restor Dent) comparing an experimental toothpaste with 0.85% sodium phytate to a reference toothpaste found statistically significantly lower stain scores at both 6 and 12 weeks, with particularly strong results in hard-to-reach areas like between teeth and along the gum line. A 2021 study (BMC Oral Health) using a toothpaste containing 0.5% sodium phytate alongside other ingredients showed 26–42% reductions in stain measurements over 8 weeks.

However, a 2025 trial (Clin Oral Investig) with 0.875% sodium phytate found whitening effects peaked around 3 weeks and showed minimal additional stain removal benefit after 4 weeks, though tooth brightness measurements (L-value) continued improving slightly. Importantly, participant satisfaction with tooth color showed no statistically significant differences between sodium phytate toothpaste and control toothpaste in that 2025 study. #2: Smell restoration after COVID-19 — One 2024 clinical trial (Am J Rhinol Allergy) tested nasal spray containing 1% sodium phytate in 26 patients with lasting smell loss from COVID-19. The reasoning was that excess calcium in nasal mucus can damage smell receptors; sodium phytate binds calcium and theoretically prevents this damage.

After one month, patients using sodium phytate showed improvement from complete loss of smell to partial loss, while the comparison group using saline spray showed no improvement. Calcium levels in nasal secretions also decreased after sodium phytate treatment. This is the only skincare-adjacent research on sodium phytate, and it focuses on nasal application rather than topical skincare. Limitations: Tooth-stain research involved small to moderate sample sizes (80–224 participants). The smell-loss study included only 52 patients. No studies directly assessed sodium phytate in other skincare applications like anti-aging or general skin health. The tooth-whitening research measured objective stain reduction, but one trial found no significant difference in how satisfied users were with results.
